Handicap League Week 4

Whippet remain unbeaten and top of the league after their win over Colly Wobblers, for whom Pat Gibson scored 22. Colly Wobblers only managed to claw back 3 points on Whippet’s 10 point start. Despite an impressive 22 points from Paul Prior, Ormskirk Tennis Club failed by one to catch Gang of Four’s 5 point advantage. Rugby Hounds started level with Robin Hood but ran out convincing winners by fourteen, thanks to 16 points from Eric Lupton. Unison made up the ten point start on Squigglers and managed a draw; Janet Crompton top scored with 17 points.

Dave Cockram

Dave passed away yesterday following a stroke on Friday. He had been unwell for some time. I understand he was 83 or 84. His funeral will be family only.

Dave started playing in the first half of the 1970s as did his brother John. They played for one of the three teams based at the Hoscar Tavern which was a hot bed for quiz in those days. He played most of his career for teams in the Parbold area, Bispham Farmers Arms being his final home. He was a member of the team that won the Handicap Knockout Plate in 2019.

Handicap League Week 3

Whippet, all of whose players registered double figure scores, overcame a 7 point handicap, to win by 3 points over Ormskirk Tennis Club. As a result, with three wins out of three, they top the table.  Despite 18 points each from Pat Gibson and Mike Unsworth, Colly Wobblers just failed to catch the 10 point start Squigglers had; Janet Crompton scored 16 for the winners who now move into second place.  17 points and a ‘full house’ from Paul Coffey earned Robin Hood a draw with Unison, for whom Alan Gibbs scored 18 (full house)  and Charles Johnson 16; ironically Robin Hood had a 17 point start on their opponents.  Gang of Four and Ormskirk Theatre Company started on level terms but the Theatre Company ran out the winners thanks to an impressive 20 points from Alan Thompson.

President’s Trophy

Ormskirk remain unbeaten after the second evening of online matches. Closest rivals Liverpool were beaten 41-33 in the first match. John Wilson then scored 15 points in a 39-35 victory over Southport & Formby.

Handicap League Week 2

Colly Wobblers overcame a 17 point handicap over Robin Hood to win by 12, thanks largely to an impressive 23 points from Pat Gibson. Unison also overcame a 17 point handicap over Rugby Hounds to win by 12;  Darren Martin scored an excellent 22 points aided by Charles Johnson who scored 15.  Squigglers only managed to claw back 1 of their 7 point handicap on Ormskirk Tennis Club, for whom Paul Prior scored 15. Whippet overturned a 12 point start over Ormskirk Theatre Company to win by 14 in the end; Debbie Davidson scored 18 for the winners.
