President's Trophy

The return of Wirral after a long absence has meant the introduction of a new fixture formula. There will be five fixture nights over the season with four teams each playing two matches on each night - the fifth team will set the questions.

Ormskirk hosted the first round of matches. The first match saw a draw 39-39 against the returning Wirral. In the second match Ormskirk beat holders Southport & Formby 50-32. Pat Gibson scored 22 points in the first match and 26 in the second.

Highlights Week 3

Division 1 :- Greyhound made it three wins out of three and go top of the table after their victory over Squigglers; Ritchie Venner scored 17 for the winners and Janet Crompton replied with 15 for Squigglers.  An impressive 23 points from Pat Gibson greatly helped Colly Wobblers to the narrowest of victories over Unison, for whom Alan Gibbs scored 17. Despite 19 points from David Hodgson and 15 from Eric Lupton, Rugby Hounds lost to Helenians who registered their first win of the season, Robin Hood , despite 15 points from Sue Perks, are still without a win after losing to Newburgh Lions for whom David Sinclair scored 18. In the other game Ormskirk Tennis Club lost to Whippet.

Division 2 :- In the Abbey derby the Sinners prevailed, thanks to 17 points from Francis Williams and 15 from Bill Gerrard; Barbara Flaherty replied with 14 points for the Saints. Gang of Four, thanks to 17 from Rob Jones won the day against Aughton Institute and as a result go top with three wins out of three. in the other game Ormskirk Theatre Company  lost to  Ormskirk Farmers

President's Shield

Ormskirk have entered the President's Shield for the first time. The competition was founded in the 1978-1979 season for teams to represent divisions other than the first in each league. Previously teams from all divisions in the MQL played in the President's Trophy. Ormskirk 2 last appeared in the 1976-1977 season when they had a 100% record -  lost all 14 matches!

In the first match played on Wednesday Ormskirk lost 40-41 to Liverpool 2A, last season's winners. In the second match Ormskirk beat Wirral 2, last season's runner-up, by 46-45.

Bill Gerrard (Abbey Sinners), Alf Westwell (Helenians) and Barbara Phillips (Robin Hood) played in both matches. George Phillips (Robin Hood) and Alan Thompson (Ormskirk Theatre Company) each played in one match.

Highlights Week 2

Division 1 :- Greyhound scored a surprisingly comfortable win over Unison thanks to a significant 23 points from John Wilson. 15 points from Charlie McAuley enabled Whippet to earn a draw with Rugby Hounds. An impressive 22 points from David Sinclair was a major factor in Newburgh Lions' win over Helenians. 19 points from Paul Prior assured Ormskirk Tennis Club’s victory over Squigglers. In the other game Colly Wobblers beat Robin Hood.

Division 2 :-  Kevin Walton (14), Clive Walton (12), and Barbara Flaherty (13) led the scoring for Abbey Saints and enabled their win over Legion Lions, for whom Steve Garrett scored an impressive 18 points. Gang of Four had the narrowest of wins over Abbey Sinners who lost by a single point for the second successive week.   Bill Gerrard contributed a massive 23 points to the Sinners score and Rob Jones replied with 18 for the Gang of Four.  In the other game Parbold Exiles beat Benchwarmers.

Highlights Week 1

Division 1 :- Unison began their defence of the title with a convincing win over Squigglers; Darren Martin (16) and Charles Johnson (15)  led the scoring for the winners. 16 points from John Wilson assured Greyhound’s victory over Robin Hood. Colly Wobblers, for whom Pat Gibson scored 20 and Mike Unsworth 19 beat a three man Helenians;  Mike Flaherty scored 15 for the losing team. Newly promoted Ormskirk Tennis Club began their season with a win over Rugby Hounds; Sarah Lawton scoring 16 for the winners while David Hodgson scored 16 for the Rugby Hounds.

Division 2 :-    Gang of Four, for whom Ann Frank scored 12, began the season with a win over Legion Lions; Steve Garrett contributing 14 to the Legion’s score.   Derek Baker (14) and Alan Thompson (12) led the scoring in Ormskirk Theatre Company’s narrow win over Abbey Sinners, for whom Bill Gerrard scored 14. Ormskirk Farmers had a useful win over Aughton Institute; Dave Berrington scoring 12 for the winners. Abbey Saints, thanks to 15 points from Kevin Walton and 14 from Barbara Flaherty beat Parbold Exiles
